After succeeding his mother Queen Elizabeth II who died in September 2022.The processions of the coronation included both Charles and Camilla leaving Buckingham Palace in a horse-drawn carriage to Westminster Abbey. Followed by the service which included Charles being sworn in on the bible. The Archbishop of Canterbury gave a sermon, and the King was anointed with Holy oil and presented with sacred items. Followed by Camila who was then anointed and crowned in a similar proceeding.Following the ceremony the royal family returned to Buckingham Palace and greeted the public on the royal balcony. The Coronation Oath Act 1688 changed significantly. Previously in the oath, a new monarch is given the responsibility to acknowledge each of the commonwealth states individually. However, the UK parliament announced the King would instead refer to the states collectively. This is because some of the countries that were part of the Commonwealth during his mother’s reign are no longer part of the Commonwealth. An example is Pakistan which gained independence in 1947.The legal authority of the UK constitutional monarchy is limited as they do not hold power to make or pass legislations. This power is still held by the elected parliament. However, they are seen as the symbol of national identity as “Head of State” with responsibilities such as representative duties.Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, took to Twitter to reflect that the Coronation is a “proud expression of our history, culture and traditions.”
